UPS to impose overweight charges on China to US shipments

Recently, UPS announced that starting from September 15, an “overweight fee” policy will be implemented for imported goods shipped from ten countries/regions, including China, to the United States, in response to the growing logistics costs and global supply chain challenges.

Specifically, UPS will impose an additional charge of $0.25 per pound on all shipments from the aforementioned countries to the U.S. based on their billable weight.

For shipments from Mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macau, this fee will be doubled to $0.50 per pound.

It is important to note that this “overweight fee” will be calculated on top of the original shipping costs, and further adjustments to the fee may be made in the future based on market conditions and changes in transportation costs. Additionally, all affected shipments will still be subject to UPS’s standard fuel surcharges.

A UPS spokesperson stated that this move is aimed at maintaining service quality and compensating for additional costs. With the surge in shipping volumes from Asia to the U.S., especially with a 20.6% increase in exports on China routes, UPS and other carriers are facing a wave of e-commerce packages. There are rumors that FedEx may follow suit with a similar fee.
